Former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and 2012 eThekwini Living Legend, Navi Pillay, recently appeared as the keynote speaker for the 2016 N. Sivalingam Memorial Lecture in Tamil Studies at York University, Canada. Pillay spoke on the topic of ‘Accountability and Justice for International Crimes: Challenges and Achievements’, drawing on her experiences and expertise with the UN, and her work as a judge for the International Criminal Court, to highlight how international legal systems can be used to deliver justice for international crimes.

Pillay, who retired in 2014 after a career in law spanning more than fifty years, still manages to keep herself exceptionally busy, serving as a commissioner on the International Coalition against the Death Penalty, amongst other things.
