The list of accolades for 2015 eThekwini Living Legend awardee, Professor Philda Nomusa Nzimande, seems never ending – with a career in nursing spanning more than 50 years there seems to be very little that she hasn’t achieved. Prof. Nzimande holds five nursing degrees, as well as an Honorary Doctorate in Literature and Philosophy from UNISA, and was the first black South African to receive her Masters of Science in Nursing in 1982. In fact the professor’s achievements are so many and varied that they’re difficult to list! As a young woman Prof. Nzimande wasn’t only interested in furthering her own studies, but was concerned about nursing education for the broader public, as well as the advancement of black women in nursing. The professor is unusual in this way – she’s a hard person to categorise. Do we see her achievements as that of a nurse, an educator or an activist? In truth this incredible woman is all three, and so much more!
