South Africa has lost a true hero with the passing of 2014 eThekwini Living Legend, Felix Mshololo, who died of heart complications yesterday evening, after being admitted to hospital late last week. The learners and teachers at Menzi High School, where Mshololo worked as School Principal for the past 24 years, are in mourning after learning about the loss of their beloved leader.

Mshololo was responsible for turning Menzi High School around. When he first joined the school it had a dismal matric pass rate of 34%. The school is now celebrated for its 100% pass rate, which it continues to achieve year-on-year. And Mshololo wasn’t satisfied to leave it at that – he extended his reach to other under-performing schools in KZN. In 2013 he helped Inwabi High School in Engonyameni improve their pass rate from 20% to 79%.

With the state of education in South Africa being a major concern, it is people like Felix Mshololo who can truly make a difference to the future of our country. In the words of Education MEC, Peggy Nkonyeni, “Mr Mshololo was a diligent, passionate and compulsive educationist who put the interest of his learners above his own. The entire education sector has lost a phenomenal individual”.
